This is an extremely large and mint condition Red Slate Pencil Urchin specimen, and is simply amazingly stunning. The body is a dark reddish-tan and has long, blunt solid spines that taper at the tips and radiate from its body in all directions. If you turn it over, you can actually see the "mouth" of the creature, looking like something straight out of the movie "Alien". This is a really fine example of this specimen, with no flaws. The spines were once used as writing utensils for slate boards, hence its name. They are not sharp, but this piece is delicate for sure. Placed on a table, this sculpture made by nature would be a scene stealer in a room. The hardest part will get people not to pick it up to investigate it up close!
